Why I Became an Independent College Consultant

Picture this: a high school auditorium, swirling rumors, and bewildered parents – that was a typical scene during a college panel. Even after spending an hour with my colleagues from Duke and UNC-CH, doing our best to debunk rumors about the admissions process, it wasn’t enough.  The college application process had become a labyrinth of decision making, where even the smallest choices could evoke anxieties. AP or college courses? How important is class rank? What should I write my essay about?  Should I apply to Engineering, or pick something “easier?” 

It was always like this, many school counselors would let us sneak out the side door so parents couldn’t trap us with their endless questions. Often, I would find myself staying late by 30 minutes or more, encircled by parents and students. I did my best to answer each individual question, dispelling myths and offering guidance. However, the number of people wanting help meant my efforts only stretched so far. I couldn't shake off that itch to lend a hand, to really make a meaningful impact in the lives of those up-and-coming students.

After nearly two decades immersed in the world of higher education, having worked at a number of NC institutions, and currently at Methodist University, I'm ready to embark on a dream I've had for over ten years. As an Independent College Consultant, my goal is clear: ensuring each student approaches their college journey armed with plan of action and self-assuredness.

I've come to understand not just what colleges want, but also how to guide students through the myriad of options. The game of admissions is a two-way street. Sure, the schools choose you, but ultimately, you hold the reins. The destination for the next four years of your life isn't solely dictated by acceptance letters. It's a culmination of your aspirations, values, and dreams.

Let's debunk the myth together – if the door to your first-choice school doesn't swing open, do you know how many other doors are open, welcoming you with open arms? Sometimes, all it takes is a shift in perspective, a nudge to see the vast expanse of possibilities waiting beyond the confines of expectation.
